In September 2004, at Transport Dam in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, a buffalo calf became trapped in one of the most unbelievable wildlife encounters ever filmed. First, lions separated the calf from its herd and dragged it toward the water. Then Nile crocodiles joined the struggle. Just when the calf appeared to have no way out, something completely unexpected happened. The buffalo herd came back. What followed was a dramatic battle between lions and Cape buffalo—and an ending nobody watching that day could have predicted. The entire encounter was captured by chance by two tourists who kept their camera rolling. The footage later spread around the world and became the subject of a National Geographic documentary. One watering hole. Three predators. One buffalo calf. And one extraordinary escape.
