In 1962, on the set of Cleopatra in Rome, Richard Burton fell for Elizabeth Taylor. Both were married. Within a year, Sybil, his wife of fourteen years and the mother of his two young daughters, had divorced him, and by 1964 he had married the most famous woman in the world. Ten years later they divorced. Sixteen months after that, they married again in a village in Botswana, and divorced again within a year. This documentary follows the scandal the Vatican called "erotic vagrancy," from a miner's cottage in Wales to the Bridge of Love in Puerto Vallarta, and to Le Pays de Galles, the house by Lake Geneva that Burton had bought with Sybil, where he died in 1984.
Using their letters, Burton's diaries, contemporary news reports and the history of their homes, we look at what the most famous love affair of the 1960s cost everyone involved: the diamonds, the two weddings and two divorces, the funeral Elizabeth Taylor was asked not to attend, the last letter she kept by her bed, and the first wife who rebuilt her life in New York and gave the whole scandal just two words.
