The last night train slides into Hong Kong, and the whole harbour is on fire with neon. 🚆🏮 Two hours of warm 80s Cantopop lo-fi — a groovy, head-nodding ride down through the New Territories, into Kowloon, and out along a rain-soaked Victoria Harbour until the first ferry of the morning. This is the Night Journey series: one overnight train, one city, one long comfortable groove. Hong Kong's episode is built on the erhu — the two-string fiddle, warm and singing here rather than sharp — trading hooks with a smoky late-night saxophone, the voice of 80s Cantopop. Underneath: a funky rolling bassline, dusty boom-bap and disco-funk beats, warm Rhodes and 80s synths. Cozy but alive: enough movement to keep you going, soft enough to stay out of the way. Neon signs stacked five storeys high, red lanterns over a dai pai dong, the Star Ferry cutting across still black water, and the glow of a 囍 sign in the rain. Artwork by NeonLotus77. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎼 THE ERHU, AND THE LAST TRAIN ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎵 ERHU — two strings, a small resonator covered in snakeskin, and a bow whose hair passes between the strings rather than over them. It has no fingerboard: the player stops the strings in mid-air, which is why the pitch slides so easily and why the instrument is so often described as sounding like a voice. In Cantonese opera and in film scores it is the sound of longing, and that is what it is doing here. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌃 LAST TRAIN TO KOWLOON ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Hong Kong is a city where the journey home is often the only quiet part of the day — across the harbour, up through Kowloon, neon on wet glass the whole way.
