Put it on in the morning and you will not hear the same track twice before you stop. Most lo-fi radios are built on piano, guitar and a Western scale. This one is built on the string instruments of East and Southeast Asia, played in their own modes. That is why a phrase here bends where a piano would step, and why the same boom-bap kit ends up under something that sounds like nowhere else. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎼 THE INSTRUMENTS YOU WILL HEAR ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎴 GUZHENG — the Chinese long zither, twenty-one strings over movable bridges. The player presses behind the bridge to bend a note after it has been struck, which is why a guzheng line seems to breathe rather than step. 🎵 GAYAGEUM — its Korean cousin, twelve silk strings, plucked with bare fingers instead of picks. Drier, closer, more spoken. 🪕 ĐÀN TRANH — the Vietnamese zither. Narrower than the guzheng, and tuned so that the ornaments fall between the notes a piano can play. It is the reason the Vietnamese sets sound like nowhere else on this stream. 🎶 KOTO — the Japanese thirteen-string zither, played with three ivory picks. It answers rather than leads: short, dry phrases in the gaps. 🎻 ERHU — two strings, a snakeskin drum, a bow trapped between the strings. The closest thing an orchestra has to a human voice, and the only instrument here that sustains. Underneath all of them: a warm Rhodes holding the harmony, a rounded electric bass, and a dusty boom-bap kit with the snare on two and four. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🚉 THE LINE ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ NeonLotus is built as a line, not a playlist.
