Hercules and the Lernaean Hydra | The Second Labor The second of the Twelve Labors of Hercules takes Heracles into the deadly marshes of Lerna, where a terrifying multi-headed serpent awaits. Sent by King Eurystheus, Heracles must face the Lernaean Hydra, a monstrous creature whose severed heads give rise to new ones. With the help of his companion Iolaus, Heracles discovers that strength alone will not be enough to defeat the beast. Armed with the legendary Sword of Hermes, Heracles battles the Hydra and ultimately destroys its immortal head. He then buries it beneath a massive stone and coats his arrows with the creature’s deadly venom. But when Heracles returns to Tiryns, Eurystheus refuses to count the labor as his own, because Iolaus fought beside him. This cinematic retelling is inspired by ancient Greek literary sources, including: • Apollodorus, Bibliotheca (The Library), 2.5.2 • Diodorus Siculus, Bibliotheca Historica, 4.11.5–6 • Pausanias, Description of Greece, 2.37.4 • Earlier Greek traditions concerning Heracles and the Lernaean Hydra The ancient sources differ in several details. Apollodorus describes the Hydra with nine heads, including one immortal head, while Diodorus describes a far greater number. Pausanias preserves a different tradition in which the Hydra had a single head. The sources also differ in other aspects of the story. This episode follows a carefully selected version of the ancient tradition while presenting the story as a cinematic narrative.
