Money is emotional. Exit is messy. And most business owners leave it far too late.
In this episode of Dorset Business Matters, I’m joined by Kaz Downing, a Chartered Financial Planner at W Wealth Management, speaking with me from the Chewton Glen Hotel and Spa. Kaz works with people from mortgages right through to complex tax planning, business exits, pensions, and large inheritance tax cases. In plain English, she helps people turn “I’ve made money” into “I know what I’m doing with my life now.”
We talk about the real reason financial planning matters for business owners. Selling a business is meant to feel like freedom, but for many it lands like confusion. Kaz explains the “seller’s remorse” she sees when someone sells, then realises they’ve built a company but not a plan for themselves. No hobbies, no structure, no idea what retirement actually looks like. That’s where forecasting, life goals, and proper planning come in.
Kaz is honest about the less glamorous side too. Starting out self-employed, imposter syndrome, anxiety, and the pressure of dealing with clients’ emotions around money. She shares a tough lesson from an earlier business exit that didn’t go well, and why reading contracts properly and building a strong support network isn’t optional, it’s survival.
We cover how she wins business in a tightly regulated industry. No cold calling, no gimmicks, just reputation, referrals and trusted relationships. And we get into risk, markets, regulation, and why good advice has to account for what’s happening in the world, not just what’s happening in someone’s spreadsheet.
There’s also a major takeaway for business owners. Kaz sees too many people sell for millions and realise they never built a pension, or they missed the chance to maximise contributions before exit. Her advice is blunt, start early, build the habit, even if it’s £10 a month. Waiting until you “have time” is how you end up with money but no structure.
If you’re building a business, planning an exit, or you just want your work to fund the life you actually want, this episode is a must-watch. Plan it properly, because “I’ll sort it later” is not a strategy.
