GoPro Hero 11 Black 8-Bit VS 10-Bit there is no difference

In this video I’m testing the GoPro Hero 11 Black to see what the differences are between it’s 10-Bit video recordings vs its 8-Bit video recordings. This video is specifically testing how the 10-Bit and 8-Bit Hero 11 recordings look once they are uploaded to YouTube after it has converted the 10 Bit upload file to the 8 Bit color that it uses for its standard dynamic range SDR rec.709 video streams. Aside from going into some basic detail of how 10Bit & 8Bit video work, plus a basic overview of what chroma subsampling compression is in its 4:2:2 & 4:2:0 variations and it’s uncompressed 4:4:4 version is. The basic point of this video is to show that after YouTube has re-compressed the uploaded video file, there is no difference between the Hero 11’s video from its original 10 Bit or 8 Bit files. The reason for this is because YouTube will encode to 8 Bit 4:2:0 and that process will throw away a lot of what people refer to as the dynamic range of 10 Bit colour. So, where you’d have 1.07 billion unique color shades in 10 Bit video and only 16.7 million colour variations, or shades, in 8 Bit video. The 8 Bit video conversion process that YouTube uses for standard dynamic range SDR rec.709, will only be able to interpret, or resolve, 16.7 million color shades from the original 1.07 billion potential color shades of the original 10 Bit video file. This is why the GoPro Hero 11 Black 10-Bit and 8-Bit video files will both look and have the same characteristics of 8 Bit video after the YouTube SDR compression and why you will still see the usual color banding that’d you’d usually notice in a 8 Bit video.
