The Mary Celeste remains history's most famous ghost ship. We examine the evidence to see what really happened in 1872. In December 1872, the vessel was discovered adrift in the Atlantic, completely abandoned. With the captain, his family, and the crew missing, the find shocked the world. We look at the official investigation held in Gibraltar, where the court scrutinized the crew's fate and explored theories of mutiny and foul play. This maritime mystery eventually fueled decades of fictional accounts, most notably by Arthur Conan Doyle, which helped obscure the actual events. By focusing on the surviving records, we separate historical fact from the myths that have surrounded the 1872 disappearance for over a century. Subscribe for weekly unsolved mysteries, and let us know what case we should cover next. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ CHAPTERS 0:00 — No crew. No crime. Sarah Briggs's letter is dated 5 or 7 November depending on the transcription. The disassembled pump comes only from the 2007 Smithsonian Channel documentary. Nobody knows who first added the warm tea. The fumes and chronometer ideas are theories, labelled as such; the 2026 researchers say their result "may" explain it, not that it does. The deck, sighting and yawl scenes are drawn recreations, not evidence. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ IMAGES & FOOTAGE Archival images via Wikimedia Commons.
