Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam — for the greater glory of God. This original Latin hymn honours Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the first companions of the Society of Jesus, and the generations of Jesuits who carried the Gospel through prayer, education, scholarship, service, and mission. The story begins with Íñigo de Loyola — a wounded soldier whose worldly ambitions collapsed at Pamplona. Through suffering, prayer, and discernment, he discovered a greater calling: to follow Christ without reserve and to place his freedom, memory, understanding, and will entirely in the hands of God. From Montserrat and Manresa to Paris and Rome, from the first Jesuit colleges to the missions of Saint Francis Xavier in Asia, this hymn remembers men formed by hardship, brotherhood, obedience, courage, and complete trust in Divine Providence. The lyrics draw inspiration from two prayers deeply connected with Ignatian spirituality: “Anima Christi, sanctifica me.” Soul of Christ, sanctify me. “Sume, Domine, et suscipe omnem meam libertatem.” Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty. “Da mihi amorem et gratiam.” Give me only Your love and Your grace. The heart of the hymn is simple: Tu mihi sufficis, Domine. You alone are enough for me, O Lord. May Saint Ignatius teach us to find God in all things, to remain faithful in labour and suffering, and to live every day ad maiorem Dei gloriam. Saint Ignatius of Loyola, pray for us.
