What makes someone a true friend?
Not the number of messages we exchange.
Not how often we meet.
Not even how much we enjoy one another’s company.
A true friend is someone whose presence remains real when life becomes difficult.
In the first episode of How to Live, Father Edward reflects on Professor Kołakowski’s first observation:
First of all, friends.
We may know hundreds of people throughout our lives. We may have colleagues, neighbours, online contacts, and companions. But genuine friends are usually few.
Real friendship takes time. It is tested by distance, silence, disappointment, change, and difficulty.
A true friend does not always solve our problems or agree with every decision. Sometimes friendship is simply the quiet confidence that another person remains present — even when we have nothing impressive to offer.
This reflection explores the difference between knowing many people and being truly known by a few. It considers why friendship belongs not only to what we have, but to who we are.
We often ask whether we have true friends.
Perhaps we should also ask whether we know how to be one.
