Most Australians think they know South Australia: a tidy capital, wine country, and a long highway to somewhere else. But beneath that familiar surface is one of the most remarkable records of Earth's history on the continent.
In an Adelaide suburb, you can walk across bedrock scratched by a glacier. In the north, a lake sits 15 metres below sea level and is almost always dry. There's a town where people live underground on top of an ancient seabed that turned into opal, a copper and uranium deposit with no sign of it at the surface, and fossils so important they gave their name to an entire period of geological time.
None of this is secret. It's hidden because the road doesn't explain it.
