You're watching The Conqueror’s Butcher, Rewarded With England: William de Warenne’s True Story.
In 1066, a Norman knight named William de Warenne crossed the Channel with William the Conqueror and fought at Hastings. His reward was one of the largest fortunes in England: land across twelve counties, recorded in the Domesday Book. But power built on blood came with a price. His descendants, including Isabel and Hamelin, carried the name Warenne until the male line ended in 1347. The name itself did not die. Over the centuries Warenne softened into Warren, and today thousands carry it. But does that mean they carry his blood? Not necessarily. Warren has more than one origin, and this story separates what the records prove from what a surname can only suggest.
