Baron, Viscount, Earl, Marquess, Duke – what do Britain's noble titles actually mean, and who outranks whom?
We rank all five titles of the British peerage from lowest to highest and trace where each one came from: the Domesday Book barons who forced King John to accept Magna Carta, the medieval sheriff who became a Viscount, the Anglo-Saxon Earl whose wife is called a Countess, the foreign rank of Marquess that English nobles openly resented, and the Duke – a title first created for Edward the Black Prince in 1337.
Plus: why King James I sold baronetcies for about £1,000 each, and why knights and baronets are not nobility at all.
