This rare 1995 late-night scene on the IND shows a work train made up of R22 and R30 subway cars converted with refuse flat cars. The New York City Subway used modified retired cars to haul garbage and debris from the system to disposal points. Captured on grainy 90s video, this unusual move shows the work train entering various stations under dim overnight lighting while passengers watch from the platform. The IRT R22s and BMT/IND R30s, originally built during the 1950s and 1960s for New York City subway service, were later repurposed after retirement as work motors hauling refuse flat cars. For a short time, two spare R22 work motors were added to the consist to substitute for a married pair of R30s that were temporarily out of service. Scenes like this were fairly common during overnight hours, when the subway system carried out trash removal and maintenance operations away from regular passenger service. 🚇 Featured in this video: R22 work cars R30 work cars Refuse flat cars hauling subway trash Late-night IND Division operations Rare 1995 NYC Subway footage If you enjoy classic NYC subway equipment, work trains, and rare transit history, make sure to subscribe for more vintage railfan footage. 00:00 Introduction 00:31 Arriving at the location 01:48 History 03:25 Equipment overview 05:52 Operations in action 08:37 Close-up views 11:10 Final thoughts Original video produced by Electric Railway Man.
