🇹🇹 A SON OF RIO CLARO — A Tribute to Lord Superior (Dr. Andrew Marcano) 🇹🇹 This song is a personal tribute to my uncle, Lord Superior — Dr. Andrew Marcano (1937–2018), a son of Rio Claro, Trinidad and Tobago, and one of the pioneering voices of calypso. Born in Rio Claro, Uncle Supie began his professional calypso career as a teenager, performing “Coconut” at the Victory Calypso Tent. From those early beginnings came a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, with memorable works including “Coconut,” “Brass Crown,” “San Fernando Carnival,” “Spread Joy,” “All African,” and “Black Coffee.” His legacy reached far beyond Trinidad and Tobago. One of the extraordinary chapters of his career came through “Black Coffee,” his calypso celebrating the historic election of Barack Obama as the first Black President of the United States. In January 2013, Lord Superior was invited by the Obama administration to attend the presidential inauguration and the Commander-in-Chief Ball in Washington, D.C. — an extraordinary moment connecting the voice of a calypsonian from little Rio Claro to a historic moment in America. But Uncle Supie’s legacy was bigger than any single song or performance. He was a composer, performer, cultural advocate, pioneer and guardian of the calypso art form. This tribute, “A Son of Rio Claro,” celebrates where he came from, what he accomplished, and the legacy he left behind. From Rio Claro to the world. 🇹🇹🌎 Rest in peace, Uncle Supie.
