How I scan my film at Home with the Valoi Easy 120

I’ve been experimenting with medium format film using my Mamiya 645 Pro, but I was really disappointed with the quality of the lab scans I was getting back. So I decided to try scanning my Mamiya 645 negatives at home using the Valoi Easy120, 645 film holder, TTArtisan 100mm macro lens and Fujifilm GFX100S II. The lab scans were small, heavily sharpened and seemed to be missing much of the tonality and fine detail I could see when examining the negatives themselves on a light table. In this video I go through my current medium format film scanning setup and workflow. I explain why I scan tethered, how I focus directly on the film grain, and how I convert the negatives in Lightroom using Negative Lab Pro. Most of the negatives in this video were shot on Rollei Infrared 400 with the Mamiya 645 Pro, which has also given me a chance to see just how much detail and tonal information this film can capture when scanned carefully. This isn’t intended as a definitive guide to scanning medium format film at home — I’m still experimenting and refining the process — but the difference between my home scans and the lab scans genuinely surprised me.
