At seventy-two, one little slip on my own kitchen floor was all it took for my two grown kids to tour three nursing homes and pick one out for me — before they ever said a word to me about it.

My name's Warren. Seventy-two years old, and I never once expected a story like this to be mine.
Forty-one years I was a millwright at a paper mill outside Green Bay, Wisconsin — the fella they call at two in the morning when the whole line goes dead and everybody else stands around scratching their heads. I was good with my hands, good under pressure, and not once in all those years was I a thing anybody had to solve.
Then I got old, and I had one little fall in my own kitchen — slipped on a wet spot, went down, bruised my hip, got right back up. And that one fall turned me, in my kids' eyes, from their father into a problem that needed handling.
About a month later I came in my own back door quiet one afternoon and heard my son and my daughter at my kitchen table — dividing up my tools, going through a stack of glossy brochures for "a facility," a nice one out by the highway. "It's for his own good," my daughter said. And I stood in my own hallway and I didn't make a sound.
I didn't have a fortune for anybody to steal, either — a little pension and a little Social Security, that was the whole show. But a decent home back there runs five, six, seven thousand dollars a month, and that was the plan: sell the house and warehouse the old man somewhere safe and out of the way till the money ran out or the time did.
So I sold my truck and my good tools and most of what I owned, and I bought a one-way ticket to a city neither of my kids could find on a map if you spotted them the first three letters. Tacloban. The city the sea walked into in 2013 — the one the whole world looked at after the typhoon and quietly wrote off as finished.
I was an old man his own blood had written off as finished too. So I got on that plane to find out whether I really was. And I'll tell it to you straight, the way it came at me. This is where my story really begins.
