🤍 Shadow Blossom | Inktober Tangles Day 9 — Batlló 🖤 A little geometry, a little botanical magic, and a tiny star-flower born from a single black pearl. Day 9 of Inktober Tangles brings me to Batlló by Maria Vennekens. Although this is a grid-based, geometric pattern, I decided to explore just one tiny fragment rather than construct the entire design. I began with a central black pearl, surrounded it with six little orbs, and let the lines grow into an organic star-flower. I tucked in delicate Flux petals, then added bands of Purk and Knightsbridge to give the composition the appearance of an intricate ring ornament — something that might belong in a forgotten jewellery box or a secret celestial cabinet. I experimented with colour while testing the pattern in my sketchbook, but for the final Inktober piece, I returned to black and white, with hints of grey from charcoal shading and the faintest touch of blue charcoal to catch the light. I love the contrast between the structure of the original pattern and the freedom of working with a tiny fragment. A few deliberate marks became petals, the petals became a star, and the surrounding bands transformed it into a little ornamental universe. The monochrome palette gives it a vintage, almost gothic character, while the soft shading and tiny highlights add depth without taking away from the simplicity of the design. Nine days into Inktober Tangles, I’m grateful for the chance to discover new patterns, experiment with familiar tangles, and follow each idea somewhere unexpected. One tiny fragment. Six little orbs.
