A survey of American workers found something that sounds backwards. People who use AI every day were the only group who said it made their jobs feel more secure. The people who use it now and then were the most worried of all. So why would getting closer to AI make you calmer about it? That is the puzzle behind Superagency by Reid Hoffman, the cofounder of LinkedIn, and the writer Greg Beato. Their answer: most AI fears come down to agency, whether you can still make your own choices and steer your own life. And a sense of control comes from using the thing yourself. One thing up front: Hoffman sits on Microsoft's board, was one of OpenAI's first backers and cofounded an AI company. He says so in the book, and so do I. In this video: the 1961 fear of "permanent unemployment" and Socrates' worry about writing; Doomers, Gloomers, Zoomers and Bloomers; ChatGPT's first five days and the pause letter that followed; the Koko backlash, and the 129 million Americans living where mental health professionals are scarce; how the hand crank disappeared and car deaths per mile fell 93 percent; how GPS went from military to civilian; why newcomers gain the most from AI, and what the latest Stanford payroll data says about entry-level jobs; my own reservations about the book's optimism; and three things it means for you. Sources for the numbers outside the book: the opening survey is the CNBC|SurveyMonkey Workforce Survey; the billion-user figures come from Google and press reports; the early-career employment figure is from Stanford Digital Economy Lab's August 2026 update. Image notes: the Model T hand-crank clip was filmed in the 2010s, not the 1910s; the Korean Air Lines 747 photo was taken at Zurich in 1980 and shows HL7442, the aircraft later shot down as KAL 007 in 1983; the Microsoft, MIT and Stanford shots are building exteriors only; the GPS satellite is a NASA illustration; the Socrates bust is a Roman marble copy in the Louvre. Other footage is illustrative only and does not show the people, companies or survey respondents in the book. Rights note: three items have incomplete rights information. The Model T hand-crank clip (Kathinka Engels, CC BY 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons) does not say whether the people shown agreed to appear. The photo of Charles Kettering with his electric starter is marked public domain on Commons, but has no photographer or date, so the claim cannot be checked. The Korean Air Lines 747 photo (Udo K.
