Around 20,000 years ago, America looked dramatically different. Sea levels were roughly 400 feet lower than they are today, exposing enormous stretches of land that now lie beneath the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and other surrounding waters.
In this Planet Beneath documentary, we travel back to the Last Glacial Maximum to uncover the lost geography of ancient America.
Discover how Florida extended much farther into the Gulf of Mexico, how ancient rivers carved channels across today's submerged continental shelves, and how the coastline of the eastern United States once stretched far beyond its modern boundaries.
But the changing coastlines were only part of the transformation. Massive ice sheets covered much of Canada and extended into parts of the northern United States, reshaping rivers, landscapes, and entire ecosystems. Far to the northwest, the exposed land of Beringia connected Alaska and Siberia, creating a vast prehistoric landscape that has since disappeared beneath the sea.
As the climate warmed and glaciers melted, oceans gradually reclaimed these ancient plains, river valleys, and coastal landscapes.
What did America really look like before the oceans rose? And what forgotten landscapes are still preserved beneath the waves?
