I've wanted to tell this story for years. The problem was figuring out how.
I would have loved to make it as a film or animated series, but the time, cost, and resources required were simply beyond my reach as an independent creator.
So I started thinking: why not a graphic novel?
I'm a filmmaker and 3D artist, not an illustrator. I could use 3D to build the characters, environments, and scenes, then compose each panel like a shot in a film.
But traditional 3D production presents many of the same problems. Modeling, texturing, rigging, lighting, and rendering hundreds of images can take an enormous amount of time.
I needed a smarter way of working. Something faster and more efficient, without sacrificing creative control.
That's when I started combining 3D with generative AI.
In this video, I share the workflow I'm developing for SOMNUS, my psychological sci-fi graphic novel. The idea is simple: use 3D to direct the scene and AI to help achieve the final visual quality.
*WHAT'S IN THE VIDEO*
Creating characters, costumes, props, and environments using AI-assisted 3D tools.
Customizing MetaHumans for original character designs.
Building and lighting a cave environment in Unreal Engine.
Directing scenes using virtual cameras, lenses, lighting, and character posing.
Transforming rough Unreal renders into photorealistic images with FLUX Klein and ComfyUI.
Developing a classical chiaroscuro oil-painting style for the dream world.
Bringing everything together into a practical workflow for making a graphic novel.
I'm using Unreal Engine 5.8, MetaHumans, Lumen, Sequencer, Meshy, ComfyUI, and generative AI image editing.
The goal isn't to let AI make the creative decisions. It's to combine the speed and visual capabilities of AI with the control and flexibility of 3D, so I can spend less time struggling with production and more time telling the story.
It's still a work in progress, but for the first time, the scale of this project feels manageable.
