This long, immersive history narration spends a single April day in eighteen eighty-one inside a tall terraced house above Bath, taking apart what rudeness actually meant there: which doors you knocked at and which you simply walked through, where you were permitted to let your eyes rest, how a bell rope and a baize-covered door did the work of a locked office, what could be said aloud at a dinner table and what could only be signalled, and why the family and the servants both had reasons to keep the whole apparatus standing. Reconstructed from etiquette manuals, servants' guides, household handbooks, and the recollections of people who grew up on both sides of that baize door.
