Tour de Francis Park, day two of the Gateway Cup. Masters 50+, 1.3 mile rectangle in the St. Louis Hills neighborhood, with a downhill turn two and a long uphill drag to the finish. My head unit read 107 degrees average and touched 113 in the sun. Front and rear cameras with live power and heart rate.
A crash on lap two neutralized the field for about seven and a half minutes, which cut the race down considerably. We ended up with 35 minutes of actual racing. Five riders got away with seven to go, three came back, two stayed away. I finished 9th.
Yesterday I spent too long in the wind over the last three laps and had nothing left for the sprint. Today I did the opposite and the numbers show it worked. My final 20 seconds averaged 804 watts compared to 545 yesterday, my best 5 second effort was 897 versus 832, and my peak hit 1,252 watts. I passed more riders than passed me on the finishing straight.
The rest: normalized power 291, intensity factor 0.93, 118 surges over 500 watts, and my fourth quarter surge quality was again the strongest of the race. That is seven races in a row now.
Two days down. Ninth and eighth so far, which has me sixth in the omnium going into the Giro.
Racing, training, and honest telemetry from a 50 year old.
