Two women lost to history. One mysterious portrait. And an attribution that had already been rejected once before. In Episode 5 of The Unofficial Fake or Fortune? Podcast, former Fake or Fortune? Producer/Director Matt Smith reviews Series 14, Episode 2 – A Passage to India, as Fiona Bruce and Philip Mould investigate a mysterious portrait of an Indian woman believed to be by the forgotten 18th-century Scottish artist Katherine Read. Twenty years ago, Mary-Lou Wedderburn inherited the painting from her uncle. If it really is by Read, it could reveal an extraordinary chapter in the artist's life in India – and potentially identify one of the earliest known portraits of an Indian woman painted by a European woman. But there's a problem: an authority on Katherine Read examined the portrait nine years earlier and wasn't convinced. So why doesn't an investigation with so much potential jeopardy ever feel particularly high-stakes? Matt goes inside the storytelling of the episode, examining the evidence for Katherine Read, the search for the identity of the mysterious sitter and the eventual verdict. He also looks at how Fake or Fortune? is changing following its recent tender and subsequent 'refresh' – from its more observational filming and new HQ to split screens, jump cuts and some noticeable inconsistencies in lighting, camerawork and attention to detail. And yes… we need to talk about that filthy keyboard. Is A Passage to India ultimately a great Fake or Fortune? story that gets lost in the telling? And does its fascinating final discovery make up for an investigation that takes a little too long to get there?
