To interpret extended XAFS, the oscillations above the edge are separated
from the slowly varying part of the absorption coefficient.
This is often called background subtraction and is an important step in processing EXAFS data. Background subtraction is often viewed as a complex and error-prone process. But I hope to show that it does not need to be that way. In fact, the qualitative description that we're separating the oscillations from the slowly varying parts of mu(E) gives an important clue, and using that clue and Fourier analysis as described in the previous video helps us do the background subtraction.
