215: My Granddaughters’ Summer Pottery Gifts! Ages 3 & 6 | Our Annual Pottery Tradition

This is a special *summer edition of a pottery tradition I usually share with my granddaughters at Christmas* — and this time Mila, aged 6, and Alivia, aged 3, joined me to make some very special handmade gifts for our family. From wet clay to decorating, glazing, firing and finally seeing their finished pieces for the very first time, I’ve captured the whole little journey. Mila and I started by making a collection of flower trinket dishes. She stamped the designs into the clay and then used memory foam to press them into shape — which required practically her entire six-year-old body weight and caused plenty of giggles! A few weeks later she came back to the studio to decorate them, choosing her own colours and learning how we could paint quite freely over the stamped designs and then wipe the surface back to reveal all those lovely details underneath. Then it was three-year-old Alivia’s turn. She had made her own collection of little stamped dishes, with Great Nan joining us for part of the making day, and later came back to glaze them herself. She chose her colours, filled all the little stamped areas and even helped write her name on the backs. The girls made their pieces completely separately, so neither knew what the other had created until everything had been through the final glaze firing. And then came my favourite bit… *the reveal!* We were having a family evening together watching the England match when I finally showed Mila and Alivia their finished pottery. Their reactions were priceless. These little dishes were made as gifts for some very special people in their family, including pieces we could take with us to Canada for Uncle Scott and Renee. I’ve been doing pottery projects with the girls for around three years now, usually as part of our Christmas tradition, and I absolutely love being able to look back and see how their creativity and confidence changes each year. This time we managed to sneak in an extra *summer pottery edition* too! For me, these videos aren’t about creating perfect pottery. They’re about letting children explore clay, make their own choices, get messy, learn what happens inside a kiln and experience that wonderful moment when something they made with their own hands comes back completely transformed.
