Hollywood taught us that the Oregon Trail was a fight against arrows and ambushes. The records say something very different. Of the roughly 20,000 or more people buried along the trails west, only a few hundred died in attacks. The real killers were invisible, ordinary and everywhere.
In this documentary, we follow the families who walked 2,000 miles to Oregon and uncover what actually filled the trail's graves: cholera in the drinking water, wagon wheels, careless guns, fast rivers and one deadly shortcut. Along the way, we follow two true stories: the seven Sager children, orphaned on the trail in 1844, and the lost wagon train of 1845 that followed Stephen Meek into the Oregon desert.
