THE NECK | NECK ANATOMY | HEAD & NECK ANATOMY The *neck* is a complex anatomical region connecting the head to the thorax. It contains important **muscles, nerves, arteries, veins, lymphatics, glands, fascia, and respiratory and digestive structures**. Understanding how these structures are organized is essential for mastering Head & Neck Anatomy. In this lecture, we explore the **anatomy of the neck**, focusing on its major landmarks, triangles, muscles, fascia, vessels, nerves, and clinically important relationships. This is **Lecture 11 of the SimpMed Anatomy Series**. --- 🧠 WHAT YOU WILL LEARN 📍 1. General Anatomy of the Neck We begin by establishing the basic anatomical framework of the cervical region and identifying important surface landmarks, including: Mandible Hyoid bone Thyroid cartilage Cricoid cartilage Sternocleidomastoid muscle Trapezius muscle Clavicle Cervical vertebrae These landmarks help us understand the deeper structures and anatomical regions of the neck. --- 🔺 2. Triangles of the Neck One of the best ways to organize neck anatomy is through the **anterior and posterior triangles**. The *sternocleidomastoid muscle* separates these two major regions. Anterior Triangle The anterior triangle is divided into: *Submental triangle* *Submandibular triangle* *Carotid triangle* *Muscular triangle* These regions contain important muscles, vessels, nerves, glands, and lymph nodes. Posterior Triangle The posterior triangle is divided into: *Occipital triangle* *Subclavian triangle* The omohyoid muscle contributes to this division, while the triangle contains important structures including the **accessory nerve, cervical plexus, phrenic nerve, brachial plexus, and subclavian vessels**. --- 💪 3. Muscles of the Neck We examine the major muscle groups of the neck and their functions, including: Sternocleidomastoid Trapezius Suprahyoid muscles Infrahyoid muscles Scalene muscles Prevertebral muscles Understanding these muscles is important for studying **neck movement, swallowing, posture, respiration, and the anatomical relationships of nerves and vessels**. --- 🧬 4. Cervical Fascia The fascial layers of the neck organize and compartmentalize its structures. We introduce the major components of the cervical fascia, including: Superficial cervical fascia Investing fascia Pretracheal fascia Prevertebral fascia Carotid sheath The carotid sheath is particularly important because it surrounds major structures including the **carotid artery, internal jugular vein, and vagus nerve**. Understanding these fascial planes also helps explain the spread of infection and the surgical anatomy of the neck. --- 🩸 5. Blood Vessels of the Neck The neck contains major vascular pathways connecting the head and thorax. Important structures include: Common carotid artery Internal carotid artery External carotid artery Internal jugular vein External jugular vein Subclavian vessels The common carotid artery divides into the internal and external carotid arteries within the neck, while the internal jugular vein provides major venous drainage from the head and neck. --- 🧠 6. Nerves of the Neck Several important nerves pass through the cervical region, including: Cervical plexus Vagus nerve (CN X) Hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) Accessory nerve (CN XI) Phrenic nerve Cervical sympathetic trunk The neck is therefore an important anatomical pathway between the **brain, spinal cord, head, thorax, and upper limb**. 👍 SUPPORT SIMPMED If this lecture helped you understand **Neck Anatomy**: 👍 *Like* the video 💬 *Comment* with your questions 📤 *Share* it with your classmates and study group 🔔 *Subscribe* to SimpMed and turn on notifications for more medical education content. *SimpMed — Simplifying Medicine, One Concept at a Time.* --- 🔎 KEYWORDS Neck anatomy, anatomy of the neck, neck triangles, anterior triangle of neck, posterior triangle of neck, carotid triangle, submandibular triangle, submental triangle, muscular triangle, occipital triangle, subclavian triangle, cervical fascia, deep cervical fascia, carotid sheath, sternocleidomastoid muscle, neck muscles, carotid artery, jugular vein, cervical nerves, cervical plexus, phrenic nerve, vagus nerve, hypoglossal nerve, accessory nerve, head and neck anatomy, MBBS anatomy, BDS anatomy, USMLE anatomy, PLAB anatomy, anatomy lecture, anatomy revision, medical student anatomy. #️⃣ HASHTAGS #NeckAnatomy #Anatomy #HeadAndNeckAnatomy #CervicalAnatomy #NeckTriangles #CarotidSheath #MedicalStudents #MBBS #BDS #USMLE #PLAB #SimpMed #MedicalEducation
