Sophie's mother tells the jury what Cooper Ouellette said in her driveway that night. Then the defense spends hours on her Life360 app, her lawsuit and her old statements.
This is the Life360 Trial. Sophie R. was 17 when she died on May 20, 2023, in Burlington, Connecticut. She was in Cooper Ouellette's pickup truck that night. Prosecutors allege he drove recklessly, with extreme indifference to her life, and that he gave alcohol to a minor. He is charged with first-degree manslaughter and is presumed innocent. The State has to prove every element beyond a reasonable doubt, and much of its case rests on phone data the defense says it cannot trust. There are no opening statements. Once the jury is sworn and instructed, the State goes straight to Sophie's mother, father and brother, then three state police detectives: the clothing, the hospital photographs and the phone downloads.
Here is what I will be watching. On direct, Lynn R. said Cooper did not help carry Sophie. On cross, she agreed her statement to police a month after Sophie died said he did, and that her memory was better then. Which version does the jury keep? Only the jurors decide.
The full day, every recess cut out. The Witness & Hearing Guide with every jump point is added here once the video finishes processing.

Complete case overview including the charges, the timeline, the key players, and the legal questions this trial raises.
State of Connecticut v. Cooper Ouellette. Connecticut Superior Court in New Britain, Judge Chris Pelosi presiding. Ouellette, of Harwinton, is charged with first-degree manslaughter and delivery of alcohol to a minor in the May 20, 2023 death of Sophie R., 17, of Burlington, after a party in Terryville. Prosecutors allege she fell from or was struck by his pickup truck; the judge has ruled that Life360 phone location data may be shown to the jury, and the defense disputes its reliability. Ouellette has pleaded not guilty. Evidence is set to begin October 29, 2026. He is presumed innocent unless and until the State proves each charge beyond a reasonable doubt.
