Days before its biggest run, a BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme hit the guardrail at around 280 mph on a closed test track in China. The rear axle was torn off. The driver walked away. And instead of giving up, the team went back out, flew to the Abu Dhabi desert and took the U9 Xtreme to 503.17 km/h (312.66 mph) on a public road, becoming the first production car in history to pass 500 km/h. In this video: • The crash, the hospital check and the restart at 457.89 km/h • The E11 highway in Al Dhafra, Abu Dhabi, closed and swept for the attempt • Day one at 490 km/h and the overnight changes to the rear wing, suspension and tyre pressures • Marc Basseng's run to 503.17 km/h, with the speed on screen • Two Guinness World Records titles, and the single-direction question Footage: official BYD / YANGWANG film and onboard material.
