The fire inside a jet engine burns at about 3,500°F, so why doesn’t it melt? In this 3D animation I take apart the CFM LEAP-1A turbofan from the Airbus A320neo to show how a jet engine works: how the giant fan makes most of the thrust, the two spinning shafts, how the compressor, combustor and turbine keep each other going, how the turbine blades are cooled from the inside, how you start a jet engine with the APU, the bird strike and blade-off tests, thrust reversers, and the British Airways 747 that lost all four engines in volcanic ash in 1982.
