Episode 6 of our 2006 NNI DVD series, "Native Nation Building" brings author Mark Saint Pierre back into the hot seat for a conversation with former NNI executive director Joan Timeche (Hopi) and former long-time community manager for the Gila River Indian Community Urban Giff. The two Tribal bureaucratic insiders provide general insights and specific examples from their own time working for their tribes on how Tribal bureaucracies can support Tribal communities and governments and lead to stronger Native Nation Building efforts. The 30-minute conversation, titled “A Capable Bureaucracy: The Key to Good Government,” explains how the governments of Native nations can support the people working for Tribal programs on the ground, as well as how those employees can help support those politicians and decision makers in critical, if sometimes overlooked, ways.
