EA Sports NHL '96 - All-star Season 1 Whalers Game 60 Whalers Revenge Loss to Habs in Hartford

Game 60 saw the Hartford Whalers at home looking to revenge their disappointing loss in Montreal in Game 59. Once again they had been stung by "the algorithm" and Coach was ranting at Patrick Roy's hot goaltending. This game looked like it was starting in a similar way. Hartford more than tripled the Canadiens in shots in the 1st period but only beat Patrick Roy once late in the period. With three-and-a-half minutes left Geoff Sanderson went top-blocker-side from his wing off a pass from in front by Andrew Cassels, almost a carbon copy of their goal in the previous game's loss. At the 1st intermission Hartford was up 1-0 with the shots at HTF 20 and MTL 6. The Whalers started fast in the 2nd period scoring in the first minute. Steven Rice showed a good nose for the net giving Andrew Cassels a place to pass the puck after he fought his way into the zone and fed Rice for the top-blocker-side shot from the corner of the circle. Sean Burke had the secondary assist. After that Hartford continued their shot dominance but Patrick Roy turned the rest away. At the 2nd intermission the Hartford lead was 2-0 with the shots at HTF 43 and MTL 13. The 3rd period saw Hartford more determined to make their pressure pay-off. Six minutes into the final frame Geoff Sanderson copied his first goal this time on the powerplay off a pass from Steven Rice from in front. That got Hartford to the coveted 3-goal lead at 3-0. With ten-and-a-half minutes remaining the Whalers chased Patrick Roy from the net after some hard work in the Montreal zone led to Andrew Cassels feeding Geoff Sanderson between the hashes for a hard shot that beat Patrick Roy top-blocker-side, bar-down. Sanderson had another hat-trick and Ron Tugnutt came in as relief. With seven-and-a-half minutes left Geoff Sanderson sent a hard backhander past Ron Tugnutt to welcome him to the party blocker-side after Glen Wesley made a hard hit deep in the Hartford end and brought the puck all the way down the ice before making a nice feed to Sanderson for the shot. In a close copy of the last goal Geoff Sanderson beat Ron Tugnutt on the backhand this time fed by Andrew Cassels who brought the puck down from just inside the Hartford blue-line just 3 minutes later. To put the icing on the cake Geoff Sanderson completed the double-hat-trick less than a minute later. He sneaked in and went blocker-side on the backhand from the side of the net off a sweet pass by Andrew Cassels who was patient playing a bit of keep-away from the Montreal defense in front of the net before the pass. Hartford humbled the Canadiens who were riding high after their close win the game before. Sean Burke earned a 21-save shut-out as well. Enjoy!
