On August 1, 2007, the I-35W Mississippi River Bridge suddenly collapsed during rush hour in Minneapolis, sending vehicles and sections of the roadway into the river below.
The disaster killed 13 people and injured 145 others — and triggered one of the most important bridge investigations in modern U.S. history.
But what caused a major interstate bridge to fail without warning?
In this documentary, we reconstruct the events leading up to the collapse, examine the bridge's unusual steel truss design, and follow the investigation that uncovered a critical weakness hidden within its structure.
Using archival material, engineering diagrams, and digital reconstructions, we explore the role of the bridge's gusset plates, the loads acting on the structure that day, and the chain of engineering decisions that ultimately contributed to the disaster.
This is the story of the I-35W Bridge collapse — what happened, why it happened, and what engineers learned from it.
