On June 5, 2009, an LAPD detective was asked to come downstairs and help interview a man about an art theft. She asked her colleagues if they were bringing somebody in. They weren't. Nine days earlier, undercover officers had taken a drinking straw she threw away. This is the case of Sherri Rasmussen, killed in her Van Nuys home in February 1986 - a murder police spent most of 23 years attributing to burglars they never found - and of Stephanie Lazarus, the Los Angeles police detective convicted of her murder in 2012. The account of that night kept changing. The bite mark on Sherri's arm never did.
