Explore why employees may resist equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) change, and how people professionals can respond constructively. This lesson explains three common causes of resistance: lack of understanding, perceived threats to status or opportunity, and cultural inertia. It then introduces five practical ways to reduce resistance, including clear communication, visible leadership advocacy, employee engagement, training and tailored support. The lesson also considers why conflict can arise during EDI implementation, particularly through differing values, miscommunication, bias and stereotypes. You will be guided through a six-step approach to resolution: identifying causes, encouraging open dialogue, using mediation or facilitation, developing active listening and empathy, clarifying policies and grievance procedures, and embedding cultural change. Practical scenarios illustrate how these methods can support respectful conversations, address concerns about fairness and challenge microaggressions. The lesson concludes by emphasising that lasting EDI change depends not only on policies and training, but on inclusive behaviour becoming part of everyday organisational culture.
