This lesson examines how leadership can embed equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) into organisational culture—or weaken it through inaction. It distinguishes between senior leaders, who set the vision and tone, and line managers, who turn organisational intentions into everyday decisions and conversations. Senior-level barriers include limited buy-in, poor role modelling and a lack of shared direction. At line-manager level, challenges may relate to willingness, confidence, capability and competing demands. The lesson also explains what microaggressions are and why good intentions alone may not change patterns such as people being talked over or receiving unequal access to development. Practical responses include targeted training, visible commitment, accountability measures, ongoing support and integrating EDI into performance management. Finally, it considers the organisational risks of poor EDI leadership, including lower engagement, difficulty retaining diverse talent and reputational damage, alongside potential benefits such as stronger cohesion, innovation, broader talent access and resilience.
