Steam Loco 3801 Climbs Cowan Bank Solo with the "Newcastle Flyer"

Transport Heritage NSW operated special excursion rail services between Sydney and Newcastle, the reimagined "Newcastle Flyer" hauled by steam locomotive 3801 unassisted, on 19 & 20 September 2026. The highlight of the return trip being the climb of Cowan Bank, between Hawkesbury River and Cowan. Over a length of 8.6km between the two stations, the line climbs from at almost sea level at Hawkesbury River to 200 metres above sea level at Cowan, with an average grade of 2.5% (1 in 40). This video captures the return journey on Sunday, 20 September 2026, from crossing the Hawkesbury River, through Hawkesbury River station in Brooklyn, the Cowan Bank climb to Cowan station then only Berowra.
