I went deeper into Moncrief, one of Jacksonville, Florida’s most talked-about neighborhoods—and this time, I wanted to hear directly from the people who call this community home. Welcome to Episode 2 of MONCRIEF: THROUGH MY LENS, my documentary series exploring the history, people, businesses, struggles and untold stories of Moncrief, Jacksonville, Florida. After digging deeper into the history and legend surrounding Eugene Moncrief, including the story of his supposedly hidden treasure, I discovered a different kind of treasure sitting right on Moncrief Road: Eartha’s Farm & Market. Eartha’s Farm & Market is a 10.5-acre urban farm in historic Moncrief Springs and an initiative of the Clara White Mission. Its work focuses on increasing access to fresh, healthy food while providing agricultural education, training and opportunities for the surrounding community. In this episode, I speak with local residents about their experiences, their community and what people outside Moncrief may misunderstand about the neighborhood. I also sit down with Jacksonville author DeShawn Rankin, author of Dirty Hearts, to get another perspective from someone who knows Jacksonville firsthand. The deeper I get into Moncrief, the more one thing becomes clear: The reputation of a neighborhood and the reality of the people living there aren't always the same story. I'm not here to tell you Moncrief is good. I'm not here to tell you Moncrief is bad.
