Fall planting is underway in our Southeast Texas garden! Now that our beds are prepped and ready, we're planting broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, and celery while talking through the steps we use to give new transplants a healthy start.
In this video, we cover proper plant spacing, why overcrowding can cause problems, watering new transplants, preventing transplant shock, and why we use a root and soil stimulator instead of immediately reaching for fertilizer. We're using Medina Plus with kelp to encourage root establishment and help our young plants transition into their new environment.
We also take a closer look at several of the crops we're planting, including Early Jersey Wakefield cabbage, Red Russian kale, and celery. We'll discuss harvest timelines, planting distances, dealing with warm fall temperatures and pest pressure, using pine straw mulch, and even show you how to recognize a seedling affected by damping off.
Fall gardening in Southeast Texas and Zone 9 doesn't always mean cool weather. We're heading into October and it's still warm, so getting these plants established in healthy soil now can make a big difference as temperatures finally begin to drop.
