For a hundred years, this predator's fossils only turned up in Russia. Then in 2023, scientists found the exact same animal 7,000 miles away in South Africa — arriving right as the worst mass extinction in Earth's history was beginning. Inostrancevia was a tiger-sized, saber-toothed gorgonopsian — one of the first animals on Earth to evolve true saber teeth, with skin as tough as a rhino's. When it crossed the supercontinent Pangaea and reached South Africa's Karoo Basin, it found something strange waiting for it: an ecosystem that had already lost its top predators before the extinction even started. Inostrancevia took the empty throne — but the crisis that created that opening was about to catch up with it too. In this video: how paleontologists identified fossils that shouldn't have been there, what made Inostrancevia one of the deadliest predators of the Permian period, the ecological collapse that let it take over a continent, and why filling someone else's power vacuum didn't save it from the same fate. Content researched from published paleontological studies (Current Biology, 2023), written and edited by me.
