Do you ever avoid talking to someone because you don’t know what to say in English?
Maybe you see someone at a coffee shop, at work, in an elevator, or at an event—and your mind suddenly goes blank. You worry about sounding boring, making a mistake, or getting stuck in an awkward conversation.
In this A2–B1 English podcast, Lily and Sam show you how to make small talk naturally without needing to be funny, clever, or perfectly fluent. You’ll learn simple phrases that help you start a conversation, keep it moving, recover when your brain freezes, and politely end the conversation when it’s time to go.
🗣️ In today’s episode, you’ll practice how to:
✅ Start a conversation without always saying “How are you?”
✅ Give one extra detail so your answer doesn’t feel too short
✅ Use your surroundings to start natural small talk
✅ Connect one topic to another smoothly
✅ Keep a conversation from feeling like an interview
✅ Recover naturally when you forget what you were saying
✅ Stop apologizing for your English when your mind goes blank
✅ End a conversation politely without sounding rude
✅ Feel more confident talking to strangers, coworkers, or acquaintances
You’ll learn useful natural phrases like:
“How’s your day going so far?”
“I couldn’t help but notice…”
“Speaking of which…”
“Sorry, I lost my train of thought.”
“Anyway, I shouldn’t keep you.”
Lily and Sam also introduce the idea of giving a “free detail.” Instead of answering “How was your weekend?” with only “Good,” you can add one small piece of information, such as “It was good. I finally watched that new movie.” That extra detail gives the other person something easy to respond to and helps the conversation continue naturally.
You’ll also learn how to start conversations using the environment around you. A phrase like “I couldn’t help but notice…” can help you comment on something you both see, such as a book, a drink, or the food at an event, without immediately asking a personal question.
When the conversation changes topics, “Speaking of which…” helps you connect one idea to another instead of jumping between random questions. And if your brain suddenly freezes, you don’t need to panic or apologize for your English—just say, “Sorry, I lost my train of thought.”
Finally, you’ll learn one of the most useful small-talk exit phrases: “Anyway, I shouldn’t keep you.” It lets you end a conversation politely and naturally without suddenly saying “Bye” and walking away.
💬 CHALLENGE: What is the hardest part of making small talk in English for you?
Is it:
Starting the conversation?
