The gearbox output turns. How does that rotation reach the tyres? We will trace a simplified rear-wheel-drive car, then compare other layouts. This is a map of mechanical power, not a claim that all vehicles have one long shaft running down the middle.
A simple visual explanation for absolute beginners, with no mechanical knowledge needed. In this video: the route from the gearbox through the propeller shaft, the final drive with its crown wheel and pinion, the differential and the axle shafts to the driven wheels; why the outside wheel follows a longer path than the inside wheel in a bend (with the path lengths worked out for an illustrative turn) and what forcing both wheels to one speed would do; how a differential's spider gears let the two sides turn at different speeds; and how front-drive, all-wheel-drive and separate-motor layouts differ.
Part of How Your Vehicle Works — From Zero, from Make Learning Fun Again. Next in the learning path: How Do Brakes Stop a Vehicle? The Fun is in finding out.
Honest labels: the car is a generic, unbranded 3D model in a see-through x-ray style, not any real vehicle; rotations are slowed so the parts can be followed; the turn (5 m radius, 90 degrees), the tooth counts, the ratios and the speeds are illustrative, and the arc lengths and turn counts are computed from that turn; no measured value is shown; the differential close-up uses an exaggerated tight turn so that its gears can be seen; no torque split, torque bias or limited-slip behaviour is claimed; the front-drive, all-wheel-drive and separate-motor maps are separate examples and layouts vary between cars. This is a conceptual explanation, not a driving or repair tutorial; for any real vehicle, follow the manufacturer's guidance. The narration is a synthetic voice.
