Whenever I reflect on Gil-galad, what stays with me isn't just the deadly gleam of Aeglos or his prowess on the battlefield; it is the quiet, suffocating gravity he carried as the Last High King of the Noldor. His march into Mordor was never just another military campaign—it was the tragic, conscious closing of an entire age. With this elegy, I intentionally set aside conventional battle spectacle to focus on the soul of the king himself: his immense burden, his unyielding dignity, and the profound silence that lingers after his fall.
In crafting the instrumentation, I reached for slow, contemplative harps, a weeping cello, distant Elven choirs, and funeral drums rather than triumphant brass. I didn't want a hymn of conquest; I wanted a solemn wake. While Mordor, Sauron, and the Last Alliance frame the horizon, the true pulse of this piece remains Ereinion—the fallen king beneath the stars, leading his people even knowing the road would claim him.
I truly hope this music lets you feel the reverent sorrow and timeless weight of an era slipping into legend.
How did this farewell to the High King resonate with you? I’d love to read your reflections in the comments below.
