Kris Kristofferson Landed a Helicopter in Johnny Cash's Yard. He Waited 40yrs to Correct the Story Kris Kristofferson landed a helicopter in Johnny Cash's yard in 1969, and the story has been told the same way for more than fifty years. But Kristofferson himself said parts of it never happened. In this documentary, we trace the real timeline: the Rhodes Scholar turned Army captain turned Columbia Records janitor, the tapes Johnny Cash admitted tossing into Old Hickory Lake, and the Louisiana oil-rig commute that produced some of the best songs in country music. We look at Cash's famous version, with the nap, the beer and June Carter thinking it was the FBI, and then at what Kristofferson told Cowboys and Indians magazine in 2011, after both Johnny and June had passed. We also separate what the record supports from what's pure legend, and follow the song at the center of it, Sunday Morning Coming Down, from Cash's first TV performance to a number one hit and a CMA Song of the Year.
