What Ed REALLY Created When He Tried to Revive His Mother For half of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Edward believes the thing twitching on his basement floor was his mother. Not a perfect Trisha, obviously. In his mind, he dragged her back in a ruined body, watched her suffer, and then watched her die again because his alchemy failed. Then he digs up the corpse. The hair is black. Trisha's was auburn. The femur is too long. Pinako examines the pelvis and gives Ed the detail that destroys everything he thought he knew: this body was male. So what did two gifted young alchemists actually create, and why did it move like somebody was trapped inside? The cleanest canon answer is uglier than a failed resurrection. Ed and Al assembled an artificial male body from ordinary materials. Their transmutation briefly pulled Alphonse's living soul into that body. It rejected him, died almost immediately, and was buried without ever receiving a name. Trisha never crossed the Gate at all. And somehow, learning that made Edward feel relieved. The thing he was most ashamed of became his first solid proof that Al could still be saved.
