Canada promised the world it would ban thermal coal exports by 2030. A new federal audit tabled October 29, 2026 shows the work quietly stopped in November 2024. Auditors found no record of an official order, the public was never told, and the deputy auditor general said he hadn't seen anything like it in 20 years.
In this video, we cover the full story behind the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development's report on Canada's Thermal Coal Commitments: the timeline from the 2021 promise to the 2025 cost-cutting decision, industry lobbying by B.C. coal terminals, why 61% of the coal shipped from Canada actually comes from the United States, and how emissions from Canadian coal exports more than doubled while Canada cleaned up its own grid. We also look at the $1 billion coal transition fund that has made only about 1% of its money available to projects.
We also go through the other watchdog failures in the same batch of nine audits: the $20 million pharmaceutical loss at the national emergency stockpile, FINTRAC's four-month delays, the Canadian Dental Care Plan's $2.4 billion projected shortfall, a call center project three times over budget, the CBSA's 92,000 hours of workarounds, ammunition gaps at National Defence, and Canada's slide toward 28% instead of 40% on its 2030 climate target.
Should Ottawa recommit to the coal ban, openly cancel it, or use U.S. coal as trade leverage? Tell us in the comments.
