CSX and BNSF's Coast-to-Coast Service: A New Era of Intermodal Railroading

In October 2026, BNSF Railway and CSX Transportation launched a new premium coast-to-coast intermodal service connecting Los Angeles, California, with South Kearny, New Jersey. Designed to move freight across the country in approximately 100 hours, this new partnership connects BNSF's extensive western network with CSX's reach across the eastern United States. In this video, we take a quick look at how this new service came to be, explore its cross-country route, and head trackside along CSX's River Subdivision in New York's Hudson Valley to catch three of these new intermodal trains. We'll look at the northbound and southbound movements, the BNSF locomotives venturing deep into CSX territory, and the long strings of double-stack containers moving toward their destinations. We'll also see the role of premium intermodal freight, including the Amazon-related traffic we've observed, in this increasingly connected supply chain. *BNSF's symbol to the east coast is Z-LACNWH and CSX's I072 and enroute to the west coast CSX I073 and BNSF Z-NWHLAC* With the service still in its infancy, it'll be fascinating to see how these operations develop in the months ahead. From the western rail network to the banks of the Hudson River, join us for a look at a new coast-to-coast freight connection and some unusual power on familiar rails! 📍 Location: CSX River Subdivision — Newburgh and the Hudson Valley, New York 🚆 Railroads: BNSF Railway & CSX Transportation 🚂 Trains featured: I072 southbound and I073 northbound 📦 Traffic: Premium intermodal and double-stack container trains If you enjoy mainline action, railroad history, and the lesser-known stories behind the east's freight network, be sure to like the video and subscribe for more railfanning adventures.
