Every shape here is a copy of a copy of a copy of the music.

HOW IT IS MADE
Point a video camera at the monitor it is plugged into and the camera sees the monitor, which shows what the camera sees, which shows what the camera sees. Put a half-silvered mirror in the light path and the camera sees two or three copies of the screen at once, each shrunk, turned or flipped differently. Summed and fed back on every frame, those copies stop being copies and become fractals: Sierpinski gaskets, ferns, snowflakes, trees, dragon curves, spirals made of spirals. Turn the sharpness up far enough and the loop grows living cells instead.
This video is a physically modelled simulation of such a rig, rendered in 4K. The beam-splitter paths, the monitor's brightness, contrast, hue and saturation, lens blur and distortion, chromatic aberration, halation, sensor noise and LCD persistence are all inside the loop, and nothing on screen is drawn directly except the light that goes in. That light is the soundtrack itself, traced like an oscilloscope, so every nested shape you see is an echo of the music from a moment before.
Inspired by the analog optical feedback machines of Dave Blair (The Light Herder), who builds them from real cameras, monitors and beam-splitter glass. This channel is not affiliated with him — go and see the real thing.
THE SCORE
Generated and original, in 3 parts that crossfade into one another, each with its own palette:
0:00 acid techno, G major, 115 BPM — ultraviolet
8:34 motorik, D Mixolydian, 132 BPM — sunset
19:29 liquid drum and bass, D Lydian, 169 BPM — neon
The kicks make the structure breathe, the snares send a shimmer down the copies, and each new movement arrives with a new arrangement of the glass.
THIS VIDEO
Palette: ultraviolet → sunset → neon. Scenes: dragon, cells, mandala, fern, snowflake, galaxy, tree, splitter. Seed: 46271765.
Every video is checked automatically against the ITU-R BT.1702 limits for flashing images before it is published.
Full screen, lights off, sound up.
Everything here — the rig, the performance, the music, the edit and the upload — is generated automatically.
