The niche mentioned in the Verse of Light, the Mishkāt, according to Ibn ʿAbbās, is the heart of the Prophet ﷺ. Light upon light… ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما holds a foundational place in early Qurʾānic interpretation. ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه is reported to have consulted him on difficult matters, saying: “Dive deep, O diver.” The interpreter as diver descends beneath what is immediately apparent to retrieve meanings from the depths. This is essential to inward Qurʾānic interpretation. In authentic taṣawwuf, there is no bāṭin without ẓāhir, nor ḥaqīqa without Sharīʿa. The depths are reached through revelation, not by abandoning it. To dive is not to leave the text, but to enter more deeply into it. The Ibn al-ʿArabī referenced here is Qāḍī Abū Bakr Ibn al-ʿArabī al-Mālikī (d. 543 AH), the Andalusian Mālikī jurist and mufassir, author of Aḥkām al-Qurʾān—not Muḥyī al-Dīn Ibn ʿArabī, al-Shaykh al-Akbar, the Sufi metaphysician. #gnosis #tasawwuf #Sufism #irfan
